Monster by Naoki Urasawa Retroperspective

“The only thing all humans are equal is…death.-Johan Liebert”

I am not a huge fan of the concept of equality, sometimes it could be misinterpreted vaguely or misleadingly. Yes, in an utopic world, everyone should equal but our existence is more harsher. Our face, status, nationality make us inequal from each other even we are putting laws to prevent it. There are some invisible walls we cannot break in this life…I have accepted this truth when I was really young and instead of complaining about it, I decided to embrace that severe truth and live with it. Perhaps this is the reason why Johan’s quote strikes me harder because it is the closest version of equality we can achieve is the death itself. All living beings shares death, no one is immortal as far as I know…. This is the core theme and conflict of the manga: Equality. Who has right to die or live? Who is equal to hold power is in the hand or not? Who is equal opportunity of get wealthy or poor? Monster by Naoki Urasawa try to question and answer those question in a serial killer story followed by a doctor with a redemption arc…Unfortunately, some readers view manga works as a child book but this series are beyond their imagination and misconception. With this retroperspective, aiming to break this falsehood and reaching higher understanding on this work of art in terms of philosophical and storytelling art.
