Discourse on the Nature of Identifying Human’s True Self:
How can a person know who he or she really is? Is it enough to know someone just by looking at his or her background? I believe that answer of these questions is more subjective than anything else, but people are actually limited when they try to answer these questions. If a student’s grade is lower than other students, general consensus about this student will contain harsh criticisms like “Our expectations are devastated”. However, most of the critics are not aware of the fact that it is not a failure or end of the world. Moreover, linking intelligence with high GPA’s or grades is a falsehood. Why did I mention that anyway and how can I connect with my previous issue? I briefly give an obvious example of schemas that people have. This is how people build a mindset for defining others. We stick to past knowledge which is related to people. Although some of our assumptions might be correct, it is impossible to know the whole story of a person. Even I sometimes ask myself to learn the truth: “Who am I?”. I have only found some pieces that assists me to introduce the answers of this simple question. I will share my answers with using tools and sources to help me in this remarkable journey ahead. Therefore, I am going to explain myself and why you should follow my writings. Your mind might be confused, but I promise that your “desforex” experience will be end soon with an adequate enlightenment.
First tool of mine is “fiction”. Fiction is the closest thing to understand what people think and believe since stories are reflections of minds. One of my favorite comic book artist Stan Lee once said: “If you know somebody’s thinking, you really know the person.” It is the most logical opinion which I get. Fictions are productions of ideas. Ideas illustrate the features of reality that they are living in. Furthermore, they can include some memories or specific events which belong to that era. Garth Ennis who is a writer of “Preacher” and “The Boys” hates the concept of religion embraced by society. He has never stated that he has a special wrath towards to religion. Hence, you can notice that his villains or fictional events are the victims of religion. “Preacher” comic book blames the decisions of Christian God and chooses him as a villain of the story. Whereas, “The Boys” displays the religion as a manipulation weapon used by corporations for deception. Another example of my argument can be Charles Dickens who is a great author of the 19th century. We see the effects of industrial era and emergence of new ideologies such as “capitalism” and “socialism”(These two ideologies are going to be analyzed elaborately). Dickens emphasizes his thoughts about capitalist lifestyle by writing a story called “A Christmas Carol”. Using some elements and metaphors in his book, he displays his view of world from his eyes. Perhaps, he added his imagination since understanding of abstract concepts like ideologies passes on the roads of imagination. When we are turning the pages of Dickens, we immediately know that Dickens is not a supporter of capitalist system. He found some empty holes that influence the society in a severe way. For instance, class distinction is a main issue that Charles Dickens disliked. He chose telling his thoughts by the mouths of ghosts and Christmas spirits. There are lots of different ways of presenting an idea. Both authors belong to fantasy genre, but their ideas contain general issues that humans are dealing in their daily lives. Therefore, the context of a book and relatives of that book convey the characteristics, ideas and beliefs of the writer and its fans.
Motivation is another tool that guide me to dig the deeper into parts of people’s stories. If we want to learn what happened in a person’s life, I guess we need to figure out how that person motivates him or herself. It does not matter if it is a fictional character or not, because all of existed characters can touch someone’s life and change their motivations or make them evolve. Personally, I love the motivation of Captain Jack Sparrow. Sometimes I feel really stressful and terrible. In those times, I open the YouTube and write down “Jack Sparrow (Captain) quotes”. All of my negative thoughts passed away with his words. “ I pretend that it was all a bad dream, I can get away with this.“ Jack mentions that life may suck in every moment, but we should pass them with haste. His perspective about past is simple and vital for human beings. For him, past is past. He purchases his energy from the future. Another quote that help us to understand his motivation is this sentence: “ Not all treasures is silver and gold, mate.” Even though he is a pirate, he clearly understands that value of life is not associated with wealth or power. In addition, he motivates himself to seek the truth of happiness or meaning of real treasures. The last of example for this part may be the speech of Mr. Keating to his students in “Death Poets Society”. He starts his speech with strong belief: “No matter what anybody tells you, words and ideas can change the world.” This character and also Robin Williams’s character believed that motto. Throughout his life, we have seen Robin changing people by acting, words and ideas which are ignored. Words and ideas are enormous source of motivation and pure face of a man.
Now, I am going to talk about my favorite tool for understanding people. Do you have any guess? Any tickling thing or did you close the page and leave? Anyway, I appreciate if you stay here and read. Significant tool for determining people ‘s true identity is the reason that people live for. We can divide this issue into two parts: targets and choices. I want to argue the subject of choices since people probably choose their decisions by their true-self and we finally have a general knowledge about that person’s character. I support my argument with this particular quote: “ It is our choices that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities.” Previous quote is from “Harry Potter: The Chamber of Secrets”. Harry Potter can be considered as the most inspirational child book I have ever read. Albus Dumbledore tells this statement to Harry for emphasizing that making your own choices reveals your true self of a person and abilities may be an excuse to hide your true self. How about targets? The link between goals and choices is closely to connect reasons and consequences. People make decisions according to their goals. This goal can have lots of variations such as turning to an inspirational idol or achieving something remarkable. Then you will match the pieces of puzzle.
After finishing above lines, your response probably will be similar to this: “What the hell are you talking about?”. Perhaps you are right or not. But the question should start with this word: “Why?”. Why did I write these sentences? The answer is very simple. Because I want to introduce myself without giving a personal information. The reason of that I believe that not just this kind of information boxes is misleading readers about author, but also it is unnecessary. If you follow my structures, you will have a sense of “who am I?”. I like reading fiction and mixing them with reality. My thoughts about life is based on fictional character’s points of view. In other words, my reality is located inside my fictional mind(I know it is really bewildering.). “Wit beyond measure man’s greatest treasure” is my motivation and it is a meaningful quote from J.K.Rowling. Lastly, my goal and choices are relevant to be a talented author. Becoming a legend is not a dream in my perspective. Although I follow my instructions, I still don’t have a certain answer. Who am I? I guess I am a mad person who confuses people’s head, but really who am I? I will share my experiences, reviews, stories, comments about books, writings, movies, video games and comics. Therefore, the answer will decide to reveal itself. (If you wonder what next issue is going to be about, it will a review of “A Christmas Carol” from Charles Dickens. I will stick with rules of MLA and the review is going to be more formal than this article.)
Thank you.
